Integration Services Overview
The Celsius system can be used in stand-alone mode to view and understand temperature performance across the data centre. However, most deployments require Celsius outputs to be integrated with other Data Centre Information Management (DCIM) systems, to give better overall visibility and permit automated linkage with cooling and alarm systems.
Alquist offers a number of integration modules complying with the main industry requirements. These include a ModBus interface. Modbus is the most widely used industry standard interface.
Interfaces have also been developed for Windows Server, SQL Server, OPC and R232.
In addition to the software integration modules above, Alquist provides consultancy services to assist clients in analysing their integration requirements, and ensuring the DC-View outputs integrate seamlessly with their existing systems.
Alquist’s partners also provide a wealth of experience where integration design and implementation requirements are more complex.
Fibre Containment Systems
Celsius sensing cables typically run for several hundred metres above and where required below server racks. They can deployed in free-standing mode, running in existing cable trays, along the top of server cabinets, and on the floor of the plenum area. However many operators prefer to deploy a dedicated support system.
Alquist has worked with cable manufacturers and support systems companies to develop a set of lightweight, easy to install support infrastructures which are readily deployable with no interruption to ongoing operations. Alquist has also tested each support system to ensure that the temperature readouts are appropriately calibrated for the containment system used.

Alquist Fibre Containment is straightforward to deploy and is generally installed by the client’s preferred site contractors.
Celsius is a revolutionary high definition temperature measurement technology. Each Celsius system comprises a rack-mounted laser control unit and a set of sensing cables up to 5km in length.
Legacy temperature monitoring systems make spot measurements using individual, independent sensors. Celsius is different. It uses a single sensing cable to measure thousands of points continuously along its length. The same cable can be used to monitor server halls, service areas, busbars, fuseboxes and other power transmission components.
For monitoring applications where reliability, safety and seamless system integration are essential, the compact, low-power and user friendly Celsius system is the simplest and most comprehensive data centre temperature monitoring system available.
Each Celsius laser control unit is packaged as a standalone rack-mountable unit containing sensing optoelectronics and an on-board processor. It supports multiple sensing cables using special adaptors. Data is exported directly into Alquist’s DC View system for post-processing and analysis.
Celsius is available in Standard and High Resolution formats.
DTS 2000 measures the temperature every 2 metres along the entire fibre
DTS 4000 measure the temperature every 4 metres along the entire fibre
The sensing cable is identical with both systems, and the control unit can be upgraded from Standard to High Resolution without changing or modifying the cable.
A range of multiplexor options are available if one DTS unit is required to support many shorter fibre-optic sensing cables.
Resolution and Accuracy
Celsius sensor cables can be up to 5km in length, measuring temperature every metre at high definition. One 5km cable will take 5000 independent temperature readings. A typical 15 second sample time gives a measurement accuracy of 0.1°c, which is generally quite sufficient for data centre purposes. Longer sampling times allow accuracy up to 0.01°c where required.
With appropriate fibre containment and protection arrangements the Celsius system is capable of measuring temperature ranges between -195°c and +750°c.
Safety and Resilience
The Celsius system has been designed with data centre operating requirements in mind and has been tested to some of the industry’s most rigorous standards. The sensing technology has been refined over several years to withstand the harsh environments encountered on offsea oil rigs and and undersea power lines. The sensing cables themselves are passive, electrically inert, and contain no metal. Backup Celsius units can also be installed to provide extra resilience.
The Celsius laser unit is designed to fit in a 19-inch rack, and requires a 240v power supply. The sensing cables can be run above server racks using existing conduits or a custom-designed suspension system. Cables can also be run underfloor to detect changes in plenum air temperature. As an added benefit, underfoor cables can also be used for leak detection where the leaking substance creates a small temperature differential.
Maintenance and Durability
Celsius fibre-optic sensing cables are virtually maintenance free with an expected service life of approximately 30 years. They can be repaired if severed or damaged. It is recommended that each Celsius laser unit is serviced and calibrated annually.

DC View’s core functionality builds on almost ten years of experience in the oil and gas and power distribution industries. The software is capable of handling very large data sets –for example real-time processing, recording and analysis of temperature data taken every minute, every metre along a 50km cable.
DC-View has been developed to meet the special needs of the data centre, where shorter cables and faster sensing cycles are required. It also includes full floorplan visualisation capability; a range of alarm and alert programs, and ability to export data in standard industry format to DCIM packages.
